I know there's a lot more on historic tourism and stuff, but one title that immediately comes to mind is Stephanie Yuhl's "A Golden Haze of Memory." It's about Charleston, but it will probably touch on some of the themes your student is interested in.

I'm going to list a few titles about the South, memory, and race. Hopefully, they're a decent starting point, but this is a big field that is still growing.
