8/ Finally, we use survey data on migration intentions and panel metadata to show that migrants’ attitudinal differences do not preexist migration: potential and future migrants resemble stayers, ruling out migrants' attitudinal self-selection.

7/ Panel data further reveal the remarkable malleability of migrants’ attitudes. Polity-specific attitudes acculturate over time, whereas transnational attitudes remain consistently more cosmopolitan than those of locals, even after 40 years in the host country.

6/ Using the new double-comparison approach, we show that polity-specific attitudes–redistribution, homosexuality–lie within the origin–host country continuum, while transnational attitudes–European integration, immigration–extend beyond it (but not due to migrants’ self-interest!)

3/ We theorize that migrants’ attitudes follow two dynamics:
1️⃣National, rooted in host-origin context → acculturation/resistance of polity-specific attitudes
2️⃣Transnational, shaped by migratory experience → cosmopolitanization/anti-cosmopolitanization of transnational attitudes

1/ How does migration affect political attitudes? Using 380k obs from 104 sending & 28 receiving countries, @filipkostelka.bsky.social, Nicolas Sauger & I find some migrants’ attitudes align with locals, while others exceed origin-host context, reshaping ideological space.
