I have a feeling that it may have been the remains of the pantograph that came into contact with the footbridge having hit a signal gantry outside Saltwood Tunnel. That's the problem with the passing of several decades!

Shortly after exiting the Channel Tunnel towards London, drivers had to change power systems and lower the pantograph (roof-mounted power collector) and the shoes. A few times this didn't happen and the raised pantograph was ripped off by the footbridge at Sandling station. 🙄

To test the equipment before the trains were introduced, a class 33 diesel loco was fitted with TGV-style bogies fitted with shoes.

83 301 (33115) stands at Waterloo after a test run with 73205. It was used to test the bogies of the future Eurostar 373s.
