This part was particularly hard to read. We had such a lot going for us. And we threw it all away. It doesn’t get any easier to accept the tragedy of that.
Extract from the article: “But even more palpable and immediate has been the loss of international influence, reputation and soft power. 15 years ago, the UK enjoyed one of the most privileged positions in the world. We were extremely well placed and respected within Europe, and as a key player within Europe, we enjoyed an influential position in the anglosphere and with the rest of the world. In throwing away our position within the EU, we lost everywhere. No longer a bridge to the EU, we are far less important now with the US and have far less influence in other countries outside the EU. And in continental Europe, the UK doesn't figure at all. Even with the question of nuclear security - and we are one of only two countries in Europe to possess such capability - they turn only to France.”
