I agree that the MCU has become bloated, complicated, and a mixed bag on quality, but if you really are interested in Thunderbolts* the only info you need is that Yelena is Black Widow’s sister and works for Elayne from Seinfeld and that John Walker is a failed attempt to reproduce Captain America

The movie itself stands alone just fine, actually, plot-wise. The characters are new if you haven’t seen Black Widow, Ant-Man 2, or that Falcon TV show, but the movie catches you up nicely, since most of those characters had little development prior to this movie.
