Public school sports FTW... track, tennis, and cross country have no cuts and 100% school bus transportation!

In my area, they are also turbo-charged by parents' fear of what might happen to their children if they are allowed to have free time...

Rode around Vancouver, BC on our first family trip to Canada in July! All 3 teenagers gave it 5 stars.

Yes. It's really weird to say "state housing reform is failing" when the measures put in place are obviously just a first step toward a healthy housing ecosystem. ADA laws didn't magically make everything accessible overnight either, but that doesn't mean they "were failing" in the first few years.

A lot of people in the US also don't have a motivating vision of what their actions can accomplish. Like, are we just trying to get back to USA status quo ala 2023? Better than now, obvs. in very big ways, but feels like the same old oligarchy with different players. Is that worth the effort?

I don't know...I think a lot of people reply in good faith who just so deeply underestimate the OP's expertise that they genuinely think they are bringing up something as of yet unconsidered. The internet has made us all think we are near-experts at things we know almost nothing about.

This post was really confusing to me until I realized you meant x as a variable, and not X as the horrifying domain of Grok.

Yeah, that’s what I heard too.

I totally understand. I live in a small town in a rural area where people live 10 or 15 miles out of town and have to drive for every necessity. But none of this sprawl was here 70 years ago...mentality shifts and infrastructure changes are what got us into this mess, and they can shift again.

Or because the roads near schools are designed so poorly that parents feel like it’s a death sentence to have their kids walk/ride.

Why can’t we? Better design is happening all over the world, a little at a time. It sounds like where you live desperately needs better options!

Yes, what a hellhole (taken at Portland Marathon on Sunday)

I’ve been waxing lyrical about the landscape every season, every trip to school for 4 years, and my teenager on Friday said, “wow, mom, we’re really lucky to see this everyday.” I felt like I had just cured cancer or won the Nobel. If I never accomplish anything else in life, at least I have that. 😂

I grew my first onions this year too! Not as nice and uniform as yours, but still good. I like having little onions around for little onion cooking tasks where it is a pain to use half of a big one and then figure out how to store the other half…

Hugely underpaid. I worked with a phenomenal SpED IA once who told me his son had just gotten his first job at a burger joint and was now making more money than he was. 😢

Waffles are gross… but a waffle iron is the perfect tool to make a real food version. Mozzarella, egg, almond flour.

We used to rely on white flour as a non-perishable calorie source when getting enough calories was difficult for the average American. Why the heck would you recommend it in 2025??

in the playgrounds and river. Towns in rural areas have huge issues (opioid/meth epidemic, brain drain, job loss), and folks extrapolate that big cities must have all of these problems, amplified x1000. And then the evening news feeds this narrow view with all crime, all the time.

Many right-wingers have literally never experienced good city life. My town is the county seat in a rural area, and people come from a 100 mile radius for church, Costco, and Tractor Supply. They experience suburban hellscape traffic, a visible, sometimes strung-out homeless population, and needles

OP didn’t say anything about risk or previous knowledge of the severity, just that snark in this situation is cruel. Please don’t put words in people’s mouths. Strawman fallacy.

I went to read this article, but a pop up ad for a straw hat helmet was blocking it, and the “close” button wasn’t working on the ad, so I couldn’t. Just an FYI, you might not be able to fix it but I thought you’d like to know.

Sorry, that's just not true, with love from Timber Country, USA, home of the Doug fir. However, I do think it's partly an act to play to his base because the timber companies are very smart and will avoid over-cutting standing timber when the market is flooded and prices are low.
