I know it's more post-rock but did you like the new Mogwai?

It's absolutely amazing and deserving of #1 and I'm not sorry if that's the coldest take you're ever read.
I can't wait to see her in June!

Thank you all if you read this far (or just skipped to #1) and please tell me about your favorite records of 2024!

And usually my choice for AOTY is a bit more personal and not a big, super popular album. So besides the album itself, I also really enjoyed living through the Brat summer and this moment of pop and internet culture. Loving this album and everything around it with everyone was a special moment.

I can't find the words to describe "everything is romantic" but it's definitely one of my favs too. Oh and there' also Sympathy is a knife! And Girl so confusing! And club classic!😭That's when you realize that this thing is just bangers after bangers, each with a super interesting idea. Easy #1 tbh

Like everyone I'm addicted to "360", or "Von Dutch", there's also "Rewind" which thematically feels like a newer version of "1999" adapted to the sound of this album.
But it's not just club fun, it's also introspective and serious. "I think about it all the times" is simple, catchy and beautiful

I have enjoyed many of her releases in the past, and it's like she took the best of each of her previous eras, and put it in this. You still have the usual PC Music signature sound, giving that bubblegum colorful sound that is also full of surprises, and you never know what to expect the next beat!

#1: Charli XCX - Brat

It definitely feels weird to talk about a dance-pop album after such a serious topic, I'm sorry about that. This is my honest list though, and like many, MANY people I've been blasting this thing since it came out.
This is definitely her best album for me, hands down!

This is tragically quiet and contemplative. For me, it's like arriving on a destroyed, empty city days after the horrors that happened there. You can see the consequences, and only try to guess how it was the be there when war happened, and to live there even before. Truly a soul-crusing record.

You might know that this is about the genocide happening currently, but they're still instrumental, which I think was the way to go about it. The word that comes to mind when I listen to this is "desolation". Like the previous album on this list, it's about war, yet it's completely different.

#2 Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead"

Honestly the GY!BE album that I enjoyed the most since their early 2000s stuff. On paper, this is their classic post-rock and drone sound, but the theme of this one and how they approached it makes it very special.

This record is super powerful: take "Ausblutungsschlacht" (about the battle of Verdun) or "Waffenbrüder". Both tragic and impressive. And the album ends on a melancholic, beautiful acoustic note that is simply a perfect conclusion. A fantastic record about war that doesn't romanticizes it.

#3: Kanonenfieber - Die Urkatastrophe

Best black metal album of 2024 hands down, and I generally have one in my top 10!
I loved the debut album of this WW1-themed act, but I didn't expect the follow-up to surpass it!
Most songs are strongly influenced by melodic death metal in the best way possible

The way the sampled drums overlap with the blast beats and breakdowns in the mix is just the best of both worlds. I like ho they used classic samples such as the "Shoot to Thrill" one, and the features also add to the album! (Despised Icon is in there!)
Anyways, this record is incredible!! <3

#4: PeelingFlesh - The G Code

One of the best discoveries I made this year, this band goes SO hard! And they're the only ones I know of that mix slam death metal with chopped & screwed samples, which is great both as a concept and in the execution! This is a super fun and interesting record

They try many things while keeping their punk attitude and alchemy, on beats that are among the best in 2024! The title track, Packapunch, Where U From... It's all so awesome! What U Need is a super addictive dance track too! And all 3 features are fantastic. Best hip-hop album of 2024 for me!
