The biggest mistake liberalism made was to watch conservatives worship the constitution and “the founders” like idols for decades and believe they really meant it.

The constitution and the rule of law they hold dear are the versions in their heads where they get to do whatever they are want.

The Clinton family narrative of the 90s has portrayed Israeli concessions and Palestinian rejection as the dominant story of the era. Chiding of younger generations about history and her revisionism is particularly egregious when her own role in history laid bare the hypocrisy of US foreign policy.

Even while recognizing his politics are loosing legitimacy amongst his own community he can't bring himself to engage meaningfully. That lack of humility is is a universal theme in every interaction I've had with leaders of legacy US Jewish institutions.

He talked about the importance of engaging younger non-Zionist Jews, but in describing that conversation there is no curiosity her perspective or experience. It was all talking points on how to counter what she say's. Zero humility or interest in introspection of his own world view.

Last year I was given Cosgrove's book "for times such as these" by family members who thought it would be an olive branch to bridge our ideological divide (it didn't). In one of the last chapters he describes a conversation with his daughter's friend that had challenged his positions on Israel.

The new left is also a threat to the US jewish institutional world. The ideological structure is tearing at the seams and won’t be sown back together; the interesting thing is Cosgrove apparently feels the to make amends, yet cant even bring himself to really try.
