2023: Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; enters memory care facility

After suffering from mild cognitive failure for nearly a decade, Hardy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023. He turns 80 in January.

2004: Licenses his tattoo designs for fashion products

Most people outside of tattooing likely only recognize the name Ed Hardy as a fashion brand and may not even realize he is a real person. The brand, using Hardy’s tattoo iconography, exploded as a nearly ubiquitous 2000s fashion trend.

2000: Paints 2,000 Dragons

Inspired by the Asian zodiac, Hardy painted 2,000 dragons on a 2,000 square foot scroll in the year 2000, a year of the dragon. It is one of his most seminal pieces of art.

1982: Publishes the first issue of Tattootime

Not only was Hardy an artist, he was also a documentarian and armchair historian. To satisfy this itch, he published Tattootime which very well may have been the first tattoo magazine ever. (Full disclosure: I am now the editor of Tattootime.)

1974: Returns to San Francisco and opens Realistic Tattoo

Inspired by his experience in Japan, Hardy opened a private shop on San Francisco’s Van Ness Ave. It was likely the first shop in the US that focused on large, custom tattoos for each client, rather than smaller, easily repeatable designs.

1973: Travels to Japan to learn Japanese tattooing firsthand

Through Sailor Jerry, Hardy began corresponding with Japanese tattooer, Horihide. Hardy spent six months tattooing in Japan with Horihide. Hardy is largely credited with being the man to bring Japanese tattooing to the Western World.

1972: Meets his life partner Francesca Passalacqua

Passalacqua’s behind-the-scenes support was paramount to the success of Hardy’s career.

1969: Starts corresponding with—and eventually meets—Sailor Jerry

Sailor Jerry designs are largely viewed as the standard of Americana style tattooing. His influence on Hardy would help shape Hardy’s career and, consequently, tattooing as we know it today.

1966: Tracks down Phil Sparrow and discovers Japanese tattooing

While studying printmaking at the San Francisco Arts Institute, Hardy found legendary tattooist Phil Sparrow who rocked his world when he handed Hardy a book of Japanese Irezumi style tattoos.

Hardy was fascinated by tattoo iconography from a young age. Even then, it was driving both his artistic and entrepreneurial spirits.
