I’m hung over after last night’s tragic Blue Jays loss, but I just voted!

Our city is at stake. Please make the time to get out and vote.

If you want my two cents, it’s anyone but Soraya. Her policies will make life so much harder for renters and young people in the city.

Go Habs! Go Jays!

After an amazing live-taping of Adrian Harewood’s podcast last night, we’re back today for the Future of Independent Media summit organized by Press Progress.

First panel is on AI in and for newsrooms, on the lovely Carleton campus.

Stuck at the airport for an hour in the middle of the night because I checked a bag and missed the bus. Never check a bag!

Had a lovely day tour in Canmore, Alberta. Great way to wrap up a terrific CAJ conference, and learn about the area from colleagues with local newspapers. My first time!

Last year, former cabinet minister Chris Alexander made the absurd claim (behind parliamentary privilege) that David Pugliese was a Russian spy.

Tonight, Pugliese shared the CAJ’s top award from president Brent Jolly.

“If David is guilty of anything, it is being a thorn in the side of power.”

At the #CAJawards with friends from IndigiNews, The Rover and Press Progress! Good luck to all the nominees!

The crowd at the Mark Carley victory party watch Jagmeet Singh’s concession speech.

Came across this sign in a uniform supply store that serves exclusively law enforcement and military/navy/air force. A traditionally right-of-centre crowd.

I thought it was an interesting example of how anti-Trump nationalism really cuts across political lines.

And why it’s hurting Poilievre.

This is a really interesting, and genuine, town hall. I’ll have a campaign notebook tomorrow with details, but in the meantime enjoy a few photos.
April 23, 2025 at 3:25 AM
I’m here at the Malaspina Theatre, on the campus of Vancouver Island University, for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith candidates’ town hall!

As you’ll notice if you squint at the nameplates on the tables, Conservative candidate Tamara Kronis will not be joining us. As is often the case with CPC candidates.

I’m out on the BC coast, reporting on a number of close races that could determine the fates of parties like the NDP and Greens.

Even though I am *too old for this shit*, I have started a TikTok account and will be posting campaign trail stuff this week.

Jagmeet Singh speaks to a large crowd of supporters at a Victoria campaign event this evening.

Laurel Collins, incumbent NDP MP for Victoria, introduces Jagmeet Singh at a well-attended campaign event this evening.

Jagmeet Singh and Laurel Collins serving up ice cream at an NDP campaign event in Victoria this evening.

Big crowd, at least 150 people. A lot of energy.

Big NDP energy in Victoria, where Jagmeet Singh just arrived for a campaign event with Laurel Collins. At least 150 people here for an evening of door knocking with their candidate.

I’m in Victoria this evening for a campaign event with Jagmeet Singh and Laurel Collins.

The crowd awaiting them is quite big. 75-100 people I’d say.
April 20, 2025 at 1:38 AM
I’ve got to duck out, but the debate is still going strong and the crowd is all still here. It’s been a nice example of local democracy, and I wish more young folks would participate in these things. You learn a lot!

Bye for now! This evening I’ll be in Victoria with Jagmeet. So stay tuned!

I was able to catch up with the fellow in the mask. He’s part of a queer community group called Victoria Pups, and they are trying to get photos with all the federal leaders in their masks. Here he is with May, and with Jagmeet Singh earlier this month. He may be the youngest adult in the room!
April 19, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Elizabeth May talks about living in a poly-crisis world, and the need to face down the forces of darkness — aka fascism — at this all-candidates meeting in Saanich.
April 19, 2025 at 9:25 PM
“My goal is to make pipelines irrelevant.”

Liberal candidate David Beckham.
April 19, 2025 at 9:12 PM
Just to give you a taste of the room. Here’s May responding to a question about fisheries management and southern resident killer whales.
April 19, 2025 at 8:59 PM
“I pledge to you that if you do me the honour of re-electing me… I will work non-stop in the interests of this planet, of this community and of every single one of my employers — who are all of you.”

May gets the loudest ovation. Liberal David Beckham (really!) a close second.
April 19, 2025 at 8:53 PM
NDP candidate Colin Plant asks the audience who remains undecided. Only a dozen or so hands shot up, out of around 150-200 people in the room. Many minds already made up.

Meanwhile, this guy just showed up with a mask and squeaky pink toy. Will there be a stunt?
