"We know too much about people in these days; we hear too much. Our ears, our minds, our mouths are stuffed with personalities." --Portrait of a Lady

"You think we can escape disagreeable duties by taking romantic views--that’s your great illusion, my dear. But we can’t. You must be prepared on many occasions in life to please no one at all--not even
yourself.” -- Portrait of a Lady

I just learned Chicago has a whole magic scene. I've never been to a magic show, but this guy's act sounds super fun!

After a crazy long wait to get this game, I've gotten to play it at last. I'm no game critic, but I would call it a cross between D&D and tabletop strategy...? I like that it's not all about killing things, and the art is great.

Rereading Portrait of a Lady. "Isabel's chief dread... was that she should appear narrow-minded; what she feared next afterwards was that she should really be so."

It was moving, and a little surreal, to learn of Brian Wilson's passing at a concert by those guys who did that one song... great show, anyway

Not sure whether I'm drawn to this because of its technical virtues, or I just like looking at books

I love this painting by Sidney Sime. It's apparently from the 1920s, but it feels contemporary. And charmingly creepy, of course. Unfortunately, his work is wildly uneven - see more of it here: museumcrush.org/the-forgotte...

Yeah, why? WHY?!? Love this city gal (seen on tumblr.)

Finished The Age of Innocence. Poor ole Newland Archer... "Her life -- of which he knew so strangely little -- had been spent in this rich atmosphere that he already felt to be too dense and yet too stimulating for his lungs."

So here we have Beyond Beef sautéed with onions and seasoned with baharat and cumin seed, on top of mini naans and hummus. It was better the second day.

Muhammara dip is great! Roasted red peppers and toasted walnuts - yum. I make it with 1 Tbsp pomegranate molasses and 3 tsp Aleppo pepper. Recipe: rainbowplantlife.com/muhammara/#r...

I don't review books anymore, but I still have lots of review copies doing jobs around my house. I want to donate these, but I honestly don't know where I'll put the Sodastream when I do.

Muriel Rukeyser from the Poetry Foundation website. I first read a phrase in the second stanza as "cellphone islands" 😆

Today on Tumblr...a film for our time, if only it wasn't lost

I like this piece by Toomas Vint. The artificiality makes the overblown lushness seem kind of sinister. It's like the whole scene was drenched in lime Jell-O.

I was psyched to discover the word Antilibrary (see previous post). Mine does various jobs around the house. Like kitchen table laptop stand.

From the Mary Cassatt show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco last fall. Mother and child are separate entities, but the boundary between them is permeable.
