Effective Transit Alliance
@etany.org
ETA advocates for high-quality, accessible, and forward-looking transit through internationally-inspired, technically-oriented analysis in greater New York.

Yes! Quality bus boarding islands work well with protected bus lanes to speed all forms of transit.

Bus boarding islands, not bulbs, are needed where there are protected bike lanes.
We also recommend other stop improvements, such as bus bulbs, which not only reduce delays from merging into traffic, but create more space for seating and shelters.
With small tweaks like these, this promising investment would massively improve the experience of NY bus riders.

ETA recommends that this be combined with bus stop consolidation.
Compared to best practices around the world, NYC's bus stops are far too close together.
Consolidation would allow for faster, more frequent service while also allowing for more stops to have seats and shelters.

Unfortunately, however, some of this investment will be in the form of "leaning bars," not seats.
Leaning bars are in no way a replacement for a bench. Everyone deserves a place to sit while waiting for the bus—and some people, particularly those with mobility issues, need one.

However, the MTA hasn't yet confirmed that it's next train order, the R268, will be all open gangway—and recently, the MTA decided to order a majority of its new R211s as closed-end trains.
These trains will be in service for decades: the MTA cannot afford to live in the past.

Walk-through open gangway trains have numerous advantages: they prevent subway surfing, improve capacity, and allow passengers to redistribute themselves along a train.
They've been successful and popular everywhere they've been implemented, including on the G train.

At the same time as the MTA moves towards proof of payment, however, they must immediately reform their fare enforcement teams.
They should all be equipped with OMNY readers; no one should *ever* be required to show a bank statement to prove they paid a transit fare.

That said, while the fare issues on buses are significant, all-door boarding and PoP should theoretically make fare enforcement easier, as all riders will have proof they have paid.
That makes all-door boarding the right policy to implement now.

The MTA alleges that Amtrak hasn't followed through to allow construction on the vast majority of agreed-upon dates.
Whatever the story behind the scenes, this infighting is unprofessional and unbecoming. These agencies need to cooperate effectively to serve the public.

To see how, ETA recommends @ndhapple.bsky.social's Momentum framework, which explains the benefits of electrification.
With cost and construction reform, electrification can be constructed for a reasonable cost.
