So my impression of victory so far is that it isn't actually much more brutal than other UC gundam series in terms of the events that transpire, but the tone is actually significantly more depressing in an attempt to force the viewer to really contend with the atrocities on screen.

he's quite right that these spectacles don't actually do anything to stave off resistance, and in fact can, and often do, accelerate it!
