I always craft on election night. This year I made a broom 🧹
A turkey wing hand broom made of broomcorn and twine. It is essentially bundles of stuff grass wrapped with bands of black twine. This is my first time making a broom, so the bands of twine are not very even.

The blooming continues. Added some natives to the front planting bed. Absolutely true what they say about agastache, lobelia, etc. being bee magnets. Several tried to follow us from the nursery to the car!

Lobelia cardinalis, blue cardinal flower. A bee is rooting around in a deep blue, conical flower. Its little abdomen (bee rump) is sticking out. A full shot of my front yard. A star magnolia sits at the center of a mulched square plot. Planted around the tree are various native and non native plants, including Japanese barberry, cornflower, dwarf fothergilla, tickseed, asters, coral bells, blue eyed grass, various ferns, and a random mum that is absolutely thriving for no reason.

Penn Law in a statement to the law school community Thursday morning acknowledged the closing of the office at the end of the summer. Dean Sophia Z. Lee said while the office is closing, the school remains committed “to ensuring access and opportunity for all.” “These values guide how we teach, learn, and work together, and will continue to be deeply embedded in the life of the Law School,” the school said in a statement to The Inquirer. The office’s work, which included helping law school members “dialogue across difference” and supporting the community, will be “integrated into broader, school-wide initiatives,” Lee said in the campus message.

More blooms
An unknown variety of Schlumbergera, or holiday cactus, that I picked up years ago on a clearance rack. It's blooming: the tips of several stems display showy, bright red flowers that almost look like birds in flight. I've almost killed this plant several times, but her will to live is stronger than my absentmindedness. A deep reddish-purple peony blooms against the backdrop of a white fence. This variety, which was planted before I moved in, appears semi-double flowered, meaning that it has a lot of extra petals within which a lot of yellow stamens are nestled. To me, this gives the appearance of movement, like a painting of rough seas. I wish you could smell this flower- it's such a deep and rich scent. A bonus picture of the sky earlier this spring, taken from my backyard. Above the trees and rowhomes, the icy blue sky is filled with whisps of high-altitude cirrus clouds.

Year two of my grand experiment in tearing out non-native/invasive plantings and subbing for native-ish green things. (Do not comment on my spacing, I will die if I get one piece of criticism)
A small, newly-planted garden bed against a white vinyl fence. In the background of the bed are two very young red chokeberry bushes (a. Arbutifolia "brilliantissima). Around them are some other, smaller perennials and ephemerals, including two asters (purple dome), goldenrod (solidago flexicaulis), Pennsylvania sedge (carex pensylvanica), white bleeding hearts (dicentra), Solomon's seal (polygonatum), and foamflowers (tiarella). A bonus pic of the small bed I started last year. It's an irregular, blob-shaped bed bordered with stoned pavers. There's some wild geranium, an elderberry bush (s. Canadensis), some type of hybrid salvia, some type of columbine (aquilegia), blue flag irises (not a great choice for this bed), Jacobs Ladder (p. Reptans), and various heuchera cultivars.
