Lyca did not sleep before the Execution. It would be her third since she reached her final molt. Among other Executioners, Lyca joked that once she dropped her shell, the first thing she did was sharpen her claws, though in reality, she had been biting and slicing through enemies for many molts before. She had not only defended her sisters from rival clutches but also cut into the shells of those they could not hunt for themselves when their fangs were too soft. Violence coursed through Lyca’s shell from hatching, and as an adult, it had become all she has known. Killing to live was the way of the Spider and of the Queendom of Vredrivala. It was an easy decision, then, to put her life on the line every cycle to entertain the Vredrivalan aristocrats, slaying whatever prisoner or monster they threw at her. If she wasn’t killing for ingots, she would be slaying her enemies in the Outer Caverns anyway, so she might as well use her strength and energy to try to better the lives of herself and her little sisters. It was called the Loom, which would sound comforting to any Spider unacquainted with its existence. A loom was, after all, central to any Spider’s life—a framework to hold their work, their magic, and, by extension, a sense of self. But the Loom was a perversion of its namesake.

Aurora went to bed early that night. Or morning, rather, though the sky stayed largely the same as it had when she arrived. The lack of a day-night cycle bothered her little—Vredrivala, too, looked the same at all hours—but it did make it unclear what time it was and when shops for supplies would be open since she was unfamiliar with what system they may be using to tell time. Before retiring, Aurora had tried to tell Pietro what she saw on her call with Dean Avalia, but Pietro gave her no room to for a word in edgewise. He prattled on about things he had forgotten to pack—oil for his hair and fur, a good coat, bedside snacks, and other miscellaneous small things—and insisted they needed to go shopping the next day before they set out to find the Athenaeum. Once he had finished, he went to bed himself, leaving Aurora alone with her thoughts…

Not many moths worked outside of their tribes, preferring their insular, self-sustaining communities without the beetles’ influence. But Atolio loved teaching as much as he loved learning, and in his sixty years of life, he had learned a lot. He didn’t consider anything impossible for him to grasp; from complex magic to non-magical engineering, he considered himself something of a theoretical jack-of-all-trades, devouring all types of surface-level knowledge to impart to the bug children he taught. When he received the missive that he was chosen as a Sacrifice, it came as no surprise. Though the Elders usually went after those with expert-level knowledge in one area, the Entity seemed to become dissatisfied with this, its mental voice asking for more minds, more shells, more knowledge than it was fed, lest it crawl out of the Pits and choose its own victims. So the Elders went after those who were generally well-learned, and this year, Atolio was the chosen one.

Now that Aurora could see her in better lighting, she noticed just how beautiful she was—tawny-scaled, with wide blue eyes and tufts of golden hair atop her head, paired with brown, lightly-feathered antennae. She was tall, muscles well developed under her chitin, and Aurora could see exactly how she had been pulled into the ocean so easily. She felt heat rise to her face and hoped it wasn’t visible. Perhaps it was just the comparative heat getting to her, but something about the moth—damp and shivering though she was—got her a bit lightheaded. “I’m sorry!” the moth exclaimed, immediately turning to leave.

One morning, an attendant, a rather lanky mosquito, entered with breakfast—pancakes and cups of coffee. Pietro took his tray, bowing his thanks and returning to his favored seat at the window to watch the sun rise. The mosquito offered Aurora a plate, and she was about to test her luck with eating grains…until their claws touched. Aurora could feel the hemolymph coursing through him. She could smell it, even, especially as his respiration increased. Why was he so nervous? Why did his fear make her hungrier? It happened before she even registered what she was doing. One moment, she was taking a tray of food, and another, she was on the floor, her fangs in his neck, dissolving his innards and drinking him in like the provided morning coffee.

Aurora had ridden millipedes many times throughout her life, mostly when she had to travel for her studies to the other parts of the queendom. Ordinarily, she found traveling by foot (or by jump, rather) to be better worth her time than waiting for the often-late millipede. In this case, though, it was simply too far to be practical. The elevator to the Surface, which was across the queendom, only left twice a day, and if she and Pietro missed it, they’d have to wait twelve hours for the next one—and likely miss their boat to Varaz’khor. Millipedes were sapient and could communicate with the riders, and due to their length, they could carry many. Though Aurora herself hadn’t given the millipedes much thought—they were chatty and generally pleasant, seeming content with their lots in life as sapient transportation—Pietro used to feel strange about sitting on another living being for hours. Even now, as an adult, he went out of his way to fawn over them so they knew just how appreciated they were. Aurora found it unnecessary, but the millipedes seemed pleased, and the more talking Pietro did, the less she had to do herself. She did try to make small talk sometimes with the millipedes if she sat close enough to their head—they did have good gossip, as they saw all corners of the queendom—but she was too anxious to be good at conversation this time around. They were also exceedingly difficult to speechread if she didn’t have Pietro with her to interpret; otherwise, she’d have to hang off the edge of her seat and read upside-down. If she had Pietro with her, though, she was sure to tip them extra snacks regardless of how much she talked. They were quite the voracious eaters.

Aurora stood in the Dean’s office, all six hands clasped to contain her anxiety, as the Dean read through her request. The University, like all places of study in Vredrivala, was painfully formal, and all actions related to study, regardless of how small, required written correspondence and a meeting. Aurora was even required to give a written note last year when she had fallen ill and couldn’t make a deadline, only for it to be shredded before her eyes—apparently, illness required a two weeks advance notice. Needless to say, Aurora was certain this wouldn’t go well. It didn’t help that she had to be vague in her request letter; she couldn’t detail that it was the Cordyceps that was leading her out of Vredrivala, as she didn’t want to infect the University. If the Cordyceps fed on knowledge, it would devour the University and everyone in it in no time.

This wasn’t Loren’s first execution, but they hoped it would be their last. The Alemora Tribe was charged with appeasing the Cordyceps every year, as the Moth Council decreed it—after all, Alemora dwelled closest to the Pit, a vast gaping wound revealing what was believed to be the main body of the Cordyceps. Loren didn’t like approaching it on a good day; the voices emanating from the Pit and slithering into their mind made them nauseous, especially when they recognized the voices speaking to them. The Annual Sacrifice began long before Loren’s twenty years of life, and they heard stories of it even when they were a voracious little caterpillar. From what they knew back then, the Sacrifice was chosen based on knowledge and scholastic achievement. The Cordyceps ate minds, and the greater the mind It encountered, the better the meal it would be for It. Loren’s mother told them the tradition was not only good for the Tribe, but for the Empire as a whole, for if the Cordyceps devoured and took over a great mind full of enough knowledge and wisdom, It would not crave more minds for a while. Loren wasn’t sure how true that was. Whenever they ended up near the Pit, It spoke to them anyway, enticing them to come closer, come see what real power and knowledge looked like. They knew It could not leave the Pit—powerful wards were able to keep It at bay as long as the Cordyceps did not grow too aggressive, and if It was fed, It would be peaceful. Still, Loren didn’t think a well-fed entity would be trying to eat more if It didn’t need to. And this sacrifice tonight proved them to be utterly correct.
