i just find it weird that music is (almost) never actually mastered to the standard level that is put forward, the usual practice is still to go loud, the default is to turn it down.

I listen to tens of new pop/rock/dance releases on Apple Music with Sound Check disabled. -14 is rare, -11 an exception. My VUs are set to -9dBFS=0VU and regularly stay in the red...

hardware like Alesis DEQ-830 does the same. there’s also some RMS aspect to it, depending.

3dB tilt is good, a “balanced” mix targets pink noise distribution, and the visuals just make sense then.
