Day 8 of #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate Claudia Rankine’s National Book Award Finalist, Citizen: An American Lyric. This is the prose of a thousand tiny cuts. It examines micro aggression and ruthless perceptions of Black bodies. Find it at your local library or bookstore.

Day 7’s #BlackHistoryMonth rec is the 1973 film, Ganja and Hess, directed by William Gunn. It was one of the top films at Cannes in 1973. James Hinton as cinematographer, brings out the surrealism and dreamy feel to this classic horror. You can watch on Kanopy for free with your library card.

Day 6 of #BlackHistoryMonth ,we celebrate researcher and investigative journalist, Nikole Hannah-Jones, specifically for her extensive and profound anthology The 1619 Project. When it first came out in New York Times Magazine, my library couldn’t get enough copies. Same with the book.

I’m gonna read poetry all morning and make Belgian waffles. My fingers crossed that the oncoming snowstorm passes us by.

I wore my birthday present around the house all day, along with my souvenir crown. I had the crown on when the mail was delivered and the wind got sassy and tried to snatch it from me. Then I switched over to my headset just to make the ears change color. Can’t wait to start streaming with it.

My sister and niece showed out for my birthday party last night. It was so bookish and nerdy, I loved every minute of it.

I'm rereading Toni Morrison books, and still get flutters in my gut in THE BLUEST EYE, when Claudia reveals her hatred for dolls and the need to destroy them. I did the same thing, but had no language for it as a child. Dolls and dresses just felt against me, as an attack on who I was. 📖

I tried to add an mp3 file to go with it, but it didn't work. Maybe that's not a function yet. So anyway, my voice is almost back to normal, so I recorded one of my poems. I might end up keeping that one because it sounded pretty decent. Maybe I'll make a little video in Canva. #blackpoets
