After reading Waste Wars I have been thinking about all the plastic I see in daily life, and asking myself, "Could this be replaced with another material, like wood/metal/rubber/glass/paper?"

It is crazy that our globe isn't doing more to phase out plastic as much as possible.

Can't believe people don't get this; but the reason this payment processor shit has to be all or nothing is because once these freaks establish a line on what fiction is or isn't okay the line will only move further and further in. You have to fight against the line entirely.

A house needs cable runs, like old houses had floor air vents. Just the times we live in

Did anyone else miss this when it came out in 2020?

There's a spectrum with "AI denialism" on one end, "AI fanaticism" on the other end, and "AI scepticism" around the middle. A lot of smart people I respect are too far on the denialism end due to social and political reasons and don't take a realistic objective look at what these tools can do.

Oh! Thou who burn'st in heart for those who burn
In Hell, whose fires thyself shall feed in turn;
How long be crying, 'Mercy on them, God!'
Why, who are thou to teach and He to learn?

It seems weird that Wikipedia has retroactively made the US Space Force decades old and responsible for GPS, considering that the Space Force was created in Trump's first term

Very strange that Outlook defaults to tiny fonts for out of office emails. Why?? 🔍

US Military intelligence hasn't been pushing the UFO nonsense on americans recently... guess they're waiting for the next bout of serious civil unrest to jangle the keys again

I've only played a quarter of the games in UFO 50 but I don't like any of them. Are there any good ones? RPGs, tight side scrollers, card games?

Really wish BlueSky didn't have the terrible UI issue of blocking the back arrow with "Reply Posted" notification. When I post a reply I want to hit the back button immediately! Don't cover the damn thing up! @bsky.app

Trump is finishing his second full month in office. Only 46 more to go! How time flies eh?

The IEEE ( @ieeespectrum.bsky.social ) should have a presence at the various Open Source Hardware events around the world, like the Hackaday Conference ( @hackaday-feed.bsky.social ) and the OSHW Summit ( @oshwassociation.bsky.social ). IEEE Spectrum is a great way to keep up to date.

"Boring but important" documents are the most dangerous and easiest to procrastinate with.

In the United States any history of life in communist countries is like, "People were only allowed to use the toilet one day a week!" or "The citizens were required to walk backwards because communism is evil!" Totally worthless propaganda.

According to Bloomberg, many of the weather service people in the US who lost their jobs now work at hedge funds. So weather prediction has been privatized by wall street. They'll get the most accurate weather forecasts first so they can trade on it.

Open source hardware and software turns tinkering into a social activity. It links the maker with others and brings a social aspect into hobbyist engineering.

How cool would it be if the US had an opposition party? Rather than two far right parties who ride on each other's yachts and vacation at each other's chalêts?

Replaying Ixion. Such an amazing soundtrack and sound design. The audio logs play differently if you're inside with acoustic echos, or outside over radio.

Plus, if Starship is gonna keep blowing up at least I can pretend we have working interplanetary crewed spaceships.

We are long past due for someone (more skilled than me) to make a web app that takes an image from the user and applies the "Computer, zoom and enhance" effect from Blade Runner to it as an animated gif.

The first time I used a UK phone, I was so excited when I heard the dial tone because I thought, "Wow! The dial tone from that Pink Floyd song! Cool!" Always thought it was just some weird affect of the song, but nope- they were just using a UK phone.
