You don't necessarily have to switch to hypotheticals. You can be more specific: "A and B have been at each others throats for years, communication feels impossible".

You can be more general as well, but the example I had escaped my head :/

I'm also convinced that most of these systems spend more compute serializing, moving over the network and deserializing than they do actual useful work.

A single system isn't just super reliable it does way less work!

Folks have absolutely no concept of what a computer can even do. I like to give architecture interviews. No one ever notices that you could solve the problem with room to spare on a raspi for all but global scale, where a laptop would likely suffice.

They are all those things, but let's use uniting language: fascists, bigots, intolerant, uncaring, assholes.

We use those words, and fail to acknowledge all the other harms done. With these words we fail to stand together. We focus on our own pain, like the pain of other groups is less. It's true some of us have it worse *cough* trans folk being actively erased *cough*, but we are only enough together.

I was thinking about how to quantify revenue and I came up with the idea of percentage of your code executed as part of a feature.

Overall I hate it. There are too many holes I can poke in it. But perhaps something coarser, stopping at teams and api calls might be less awful. Felt easy enough to do

Refactoring and types make all the difference between a manageable massive codebase and a mess. Once problems require machines to make changes at scale in a reasonable timeframe (like... method renames, simple stuff!) with any kind of certainty, they're you're bread and butter.

I see your really big computer, and raise you that all computers are distributed systems, and only becoming more so.

I much prefer the framing of "Modern Observability" and "Legacy Observability". As you say in your article, 3.0 is Business intelligence.
