Finland's forests: Timber, trade-offs & transition Can the role of Finland's forest carbon sinks be enhanced? How? What would the regional-level implications be for Finland's forest and energy sectors in terms of economic growth and employment? Nordregio's report 'Regional economic effects of the green transition in the Nordic Region' looks at the impact of green transition in forestry and forest industry and Finland and other key sectors across the Nordics. With the largest forest resources per capita in the EU, Finland relies on its forests for industry, carbon storage, and rural employment. When it comes to the green transition, there are also trade-offs to be balanced. Sustainable forestry is a pillar of Finland’s economy, but is it possible to boost forest carbon sinks while maintaining economic growth and supporting jobs and industry? Policy options: 1 - Increase gross annual increment Enhancing forest growth through improved management practices to increase the overall wood supply. 2 - Reduce harvests Lowering logging levels to store more carbon and protect biodiversity. 3 - ‘More from less’ Using wood more efficiently through high-value products, optimised processing methods and innovation.
