Both Pickett and Bazzaz have served ESA with distinction in numerous capacities over many years and have broadened participation through their commitments to mentoring to enhance diversity, inclusion and belonging.
October 22, 2025 at 8:31 PM
Fakhri Bazzaz and Steward Pickett strongly believed in mentoring and service to the ecological and broader scientific community and have mentored numerous early career scientists and aided innumerable colleagues, often in diverse and under-represented groups.
October 22, 2025 at 8:31 PM
The inaugural award will be presented at the 2026 ESA meeting in Salt Lake City. The Bazzaz-Pickett Award has been created to recognize “long-standing contributions of an individual for mentoring to enhance diversity, inclusion and belonging and advance excellence in ecology”.

They also publicly deposited code for fitting each model and provided study design recommendations, which should remove a major barrier to the use of TPC models by ecologists and other scientists.

Thus, to facilitate the choice of the most appropriate model(s) for a given dataset, they estimated a dendrogram of all 83 models based on the average similarity of their fits.

They found that model performance cannot be predicted from sampling resolution, type of biological rate, or taxonomic information.

A major theme of his research involves investigating how biological rates of ectotherms respond to temperature—the “thermal performance curve” (TPC). In their recent paper in Nature Communications, he and his co-authors evaluated the performance of 83 TPC models across 2,739 datasets.
