In light of the PSF's recent loss of an NSF grant and attendant funding shortfall, I will be matching donations up to $5000. Send me your receipts.

Very happy if you've already donated for similar reasons but the point is to motivate *new* donations so be sure the timestamp is after this toot 😉.

@forgejo I have a small VPS with limited disk space running a personal Forgejo instance. I noticed recently that Forgejo provides links to download zips and tarballs of every tag in my repo. Is there a way to disable this so I can save some space? Not finding much in the configuration docs…

The thing that is making me hopeful in this past week is summed up nicely in this concluding para by @gregsargent.bsky.social in the linked piece.

Core ideals, such as free speech, still hold great power in our culture. We're floundering, but not completely lost.

I came to Hollow Knight extremely late. (After I heard about Silksong.) It’s really very good.

On the latest discourse...

"Don't comply in advance" includes "don't freak out more than is useful."

The word "prestige" used to mean "illusion." Human power enforcement has always been largely about illusion. Make yourself look bigger than you are. Paint the naked warriors blue. Wear a huge […]

I desperately need these supposed left-leaning people tripping over themselves to say nice things about CK to please take a seat on a cactus. He was a vile human who advanced hateful causes and pushed disgusting fascist propaganda at children.

Get the fuck over it! You do not owe […]

I don't know what to do with how much I dislike AI and its relentless creep into my industry. The more I see of it, the more inevitable it seems, and the more alienated I feel from the software engineering industry.

It could very well push me out of the industry, not because it steals my job […]

This website has a banner to suggest you install an ad blocker. (I have one installed and it still displayed the banner, but that's beside the point.)

I woke up from a bad dream involving several people in my life. And now I'm mad at those people. Totally unreasonable. Why are brains like this?

All I want from websites is to not be assaulted with moving pictures and floating boxes when I navigate to one.

This is apparently too much to ask.

The more of your life you spend fixing software, the more appreciation you develop for people who fix things with their hands. I think that explains a lot of the engagement I see on Mastodon with the repair community, makers, hobbyists, and the solarpunk reusability folks.

And I am *here for it*.

Question about #FreeBSD’s development branches:

There’s STABLE and CURRENT. As I understand it, STABLE is kinda mid-way between CURRENT and RELEASE. I can update my system to STABLE with

freebsd-update -r 15.0-STABLE upgrade

but when I look at the src repo (cause I have to build a STABLE […]

I'm scared to be in the US these days, despite all my privileges. The direction we’re heading is really horrifying.

Being in California gives me a certain sense of safety, but it feels increasingly tenuous, especially as Newsom plays footsie with dangerous people and ideas. If he […]
