Very fun to talk water & climate with international rotary students & @carleton.edu students. Common interests included fishing, recreation, and gathering. We’re supporting engagement aligned with goals in our community to remove the dam & support a proactive response. Engagement matters!

I’m in front of the interdisciplinary science complex @carleton.edu getting ready for 24 people in AASHE’s decarbonization academy to learn about our systems approach to decarbonization & tour the East Energy Station, the brain of the district geothermal system w Linda Weingarten, AVP of facilities

On campus been working with our food service provider to understand new categories of emissions, from those we have long measured. Beef is such a big slice of food emissions. It’s been satisfying scale solution through networks (of the food provider) while students think about campus.

I love local government processes & actions. Tonight our city is formally endorsing passenger rail proposed in Minnesota. Next month council votes on the purchase of a dam from Post to support its removal. These are big sustainability & justice issues & related to outcomes on campus & community.

Excited to have @alexrbarron.bsky.social on campus tomorrow. Making progress means we must keep having important conversations about climate action in higher ed & using evidence-based approaches.

Best part of the UMACS meeting, hearing from students about what they valued, for many it was a first professional meeting & their values truly reflect their individual identities in sustainability & climate work.

What a lovely open farm day @carleton.edu & a pretty focaccia with farm ingredients baked at Dacie Moses! Well done!

Very excited for the @carleton.edu student farm open house in collaboration with Dacie Moses (our bake together community house). There are opportunities to volunteer & talk about curriculum, research, & club collaborations. Also a grant funded composter is underway, come lay a brick:)

One of the interns working in our office visited an orchard. Through the years, I’ve received “an apple on my desk” from travel trinkets, college bling, books, & this time actual apples. Great time of year for them. Thanks to the student I won’t embarrass on social media.

What can the locust scourge of 1877 teach us about today?

I’m catching up on a little history of my community.

Flashback to last spring’s “let’s adapt forum” exploring riverfront resilience & opportunities to better address flooding. Our mayor moderated, Clean River Partners shared nearby dam removal efforts, the city engineer our current flooding, & Carleton students shared community science.

Working with the international rotary exchange & the Climate Initiative this year. International high school students will complete a climate leadership program that supports learning & reflection on action. In Northfield, they will then partner on action projects with Carleton students.

Enjoyed a walk with our former Sustainability Manager Martha who worked with many to supported major decarbonization here. Nerdy fact, she also went to Mounds View High School. We both enjoy Carleton’s fairytale campus & integrating climate action into work:). A highlight during our walk below.

Asked my work neighbors what they thought about sustainable land management. They just said, “bah.”

Definitely still thinking about this…

Heading to the student farm to see the mad happenings of ground squirrels. It’s a blow to students excited by growing, selling, & donating food & they are constantly thinking through what they do to diversify & improve management. I hope they can take it in stride & know that this builds empathy.

In celebration of expanding our geothermal capacity @carleton.edu with a new Darcy System, colleague Dann Hulbert took this beautiful drone footage. Soon the well footprint will disappear. This mini system will connect to Parish, Douglas, Rice, & Page Houses where we are installing heat pumps.
