Ever read a book that revolutionized your brain chemistry?
A review for the book Nefando by Mónica Ojeda: The fallibility of the spoken word; the desire to give form to a formless concept; language as an imperfect tool; how does one express our infinitely faceted inner feelings and pain within the confines and limitations of speech? The human experience is boundless and complex, we can approximate conveyance through the restricted lens of verbal or written communication, but we could never feasibly channel these emotions with the mere use of characters arranged in a specific order, or the vibrations of our vocal chords at precise frequencies and lengths alone. Our sensibilities are incorporeal, ethereal, enigmatic, and inscrutable. Objectivity has no place in a world comprised of individual subjectivity; a moral compass does not have a magnetic north to point towards. This books dances on the razor's edge of acceptability. It's borderline reprehensible, deeply discomforting and disturbing, and it's one of the best, most thought provoking books I'll ever read. The structure at play is incredibly layered and experimental in presentation, the story switches between transcriptions of spoken interviews, excerpts of a fictional book-within-a-book, second person inner monologue, forum posts, and journal entries. Every character here is unified through their knowledge of the Spanish language, but 2 characters are Mexican, 3 are Ecuadorian, and 1 is Spanish. Even the language they have in common is still subject to their own idiosyncrasy, and perfect communication is an impossibility. It all really helps highlight just how vastly different we all are fundamentally, and how difficult human connection can be with our limited toolset. Everyone is defined by the desire for personal expression, to be understood on a deeper, innate level; to transcend their pain and take control over their personhood. If that's not a good definition of the lived experience, I don't know what else is. Words fail me.

Watched the 1963 sci-fi tokusatsu horror movie Matango by Ishiro Honda of Godzilla fame, and it really didn't disappoint. Just a fascinating and densely atmospheric movie
A letterboxd review that reads: Dare I say, a more interesting and nuanced exploration of the nuclear terror allegory that Ishiro Honda explored previously in Godzilla? While Godzilla was a pretty one-dimensional metaphor for nuclear power's immense destructive capabilities while still acknowledging the potential usage for good, Matango more closely examines the impact that nuclear hellfire reigned on the individual level with its allegory. Women are subjugated and immediately commodified for their bodies, scarce resources are hoarded and bargained for currency which may not even have much of a use anymore, and people immediately turn to nihilism and the destructive overindulgence of vice during dire times. It's not hard to draw a line between the mushroom men's designs and the shape of a mushroom cloud, the literal personification of armageddon. The sole survivor, Murai looks out at a neon-lit skyline of a rapidly modernizing Tokyo cityscape post-American occupation, and wonders if he should have stayed on the island; if the radical change of the increasingly westernized country is worth the subsumption of the way of life he was familiar with. Mold is a fungal growth that is spurred on by moisture, but a mold is also a shape you will be plied into in order to conform. Deeply atmospheric movie with absolutely gorgeous set design and monster effects. A lot more depth than I was expecting from the "mushroom monster men" movie I thought I was going into!

Nobody ever talks about Day of the Dead and, honestly, it's a bit criminal
The best of the original Romero zombie trilogy, and, dare I say, the best zombie movie of all time?? It just has everything I could ever want. Incredibly compelling characters, interpersonal power struggles driving the drama, the peak of Tom Savini's gore makeup effects, fun and interesting concepts with unique takes on the zombie genre, and one of my favorite soundtracks in a film ever. Crushingly bleak, but I never fully veering into nihilism; the narrative totally embodies the absurdist philosophy in my eyes. There's a really strong emotional core here too that will pull at your heart strings in a way you'd never expect. Also, really fun to just have a well written and competent woman as the main lead here? Sarah kicks ass, and is the total rock of the movie as the only truly pragmatic one bearing the weight on her shoulders, she's a great audience surrogate for the existential messaging of the movie. The monologue John gives Sarah at "The Ritz" just replays in my head constantly. I can see how this movie is overshadowed by Night of the Living Dead as the codifier of the zombie genre and Dawn of the Dead as the subsequent apex, but this movie is truly a thesis statement and the culmination of all the ideas Romero created with his mythology. "You ain't never gonna figure it out, just like they never figured out why the stars are where they're at. It ain't mankind's job to figure that stuff out. So what you're doing is a waste of time, Sarah. And time is all we got left, you know."
