I think a lot of this comes from Mechwarrior completely disappearing for nearly two decades after the Mechassault titles, and then became mismanaged by PGI, who had a habit of locking down threads and booting people over criticisms. MW5 was the first I heard real criticism in the mainstream.

Why would they bother separating it when all the katakana exists for is to inform them how to pronounce the english characters? "ジークアクス" is way neater than "ジーキュウエックス"; see also the GN-X being written as "ジンクス" instead of "ジーエヌエックス"
