I do think that a sans serif single-storey |a|s can work. For example something like the one found in Monaco or Andika or Cadman.

I’m aware of the whole “infant” school of typefaces (and variants of) and, while I’m still not really convinced of their merits, at least they usually add a tail. It’s not just a |o| with a vertical bar stuck to it.

Maybe it’s just me, but I always misread it as “Codex Complaint” 🤷🏼
