Painting this war about territories, about who owns how much land (without locking at population distribution) and even on who owns what land is very misleading. While Ukraine wishes all their territory to be liberated, this is not a war about land control, but control of a people and their identity

Ukraine still holds a couple of villages in Luhansk, with no indication they will fall any time soon. The main population centres in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, including their namesake regional capitals, are well under Ukrainian control.

Absolutely agreed. That's why we have to be careful between just calling them populists, which is legitimising, and saying that their tactics are populist because they exploit emotions that a segment of the population has.

So of course "the people" don't want the extremist measures the far right promotes and pushes for, but a lot of people do wish change because their lives are not turning how they wanted to be, and these far right actors present themselves as the only avenue for the change they desire.

While I agree with this point, it is also true that the far right is tapping on sentiments that an important part of the population, especially younger folk, have. I would still define that as populist.

It's true that the term legitimises extremists, but ignoring this aspect can also be blinding.

As a Westerner currently in Ukraine, under air raid alert: your opinion is valid but:

Elections: let's judge if they don't return after the war

Drafts: agreed it could be far better

Aid: that's how alliances work, they are facing a powerful enemy.

This doesn't take Ukraine's merits away.
