Ernie Howell was a lifelong Southend United supporter and, after he passed, we found his SUFC scrapbook, dozens of 1950s programmes (Home and Away) and the odd promotional photo. We’ll post scans sporadically.

One of the loveliest Programme covers ever from Crystal Palace

At the bottom it says “Official Programme” and 3d (three pence rather than three dimensional lol) Our Visitors ..• SOUTHEND UNITED Eighth in the League table despite having played two games fewer than any other club, Southend owe their position almost solely to their fine home record. In twelve games at home they have dropped only one of the possible 24 points and that point was conceded to the Palace in September. Palace, in fact, are the only team against whom Southend have failed to score at home. Away, the seasiders are not nearly so convincing. They have yet to win an away game, and have scored less goals on their opponents' grounds than any other team in the Third Division South. Founded in 1908, Southend's best season was in 1931-32, when they finished third to Fulham and Reading in the League table-missing promotion by four points. Their 7—0 defeat of Queen's Park Rangers in 1928 is their biggest victory to date, while their 11—I loss to Northampton in 1909 is their heaviest reverse. Since 1946-47 the results of games between Southend and the Palace have been fairly even. In the first post-war season Southend collected the maximum four points from the two League games, and in the following season obtained three out of four. The Palace, however, evened things last year by winning both home and away games, and by taking a point from their visit to Southend earlier in the season.

Edward Ernest Walter Howell (Ernie) was my father in law and was born in Rochford Hospital in September 1937.

Ernie served in the Royal Engineers as part of 37 field Squadron which, in August 1957 was deployed to Christmas Island.

A promotional photograph of Kevin Baron The photo is a head and shoulders shot with Kevin having his arms crossed. He is, we assume, in his Southend United kit but is in black and white and no crest is visible. Mr.Baron played for Southend United from 1954-1958 after signing from Liverpool. He played 138 times for Southend, scoring 45 goals (Wikipedia) The back of the photo has printed (in his own handwriting) a message from Mr.Baron saying “For up-to-the - minute sports news, I always buy The Star”
