@mshu.bsky.social & @jbgruber.bsky.social presenting great work showing that scraping TikTok yields similar results to using the API (although it is a lot slower and doesn't work as well with larger accounts).

Can news media help? Regular news readers were less prone to misperceptions across all three measures, suggesting that news readership can help correct our skewed sense of the opinion climate. ARIMA timeseries modelling supported this only for masking.
May 21, 2025 at 7:13 AM
Importantly, we found that people in the opinion minority (mostly those opposing the measures) were wildly off in their guesses, while those in the majority were far more accurate. This is 'false consensus' in action: small vocal groups overestimate their own prevalence.
May 21, 2025 at 7:13 AM
Across every wave, participants consistently underestimated public support for all three measures: masking, vaccination, and the contact‑tracing app. These gaps were small but pervasive throughout the 2 year period.

The biggest gap? Mask wearing, the most visible measure.

Do people accurately judge the public opinion climate during crises?

Using 2 yrs of data, our study dives into perceptions of public opinion on COVID‑19 measures, why those views often missed the mark, and what can help correct them!

@dvshah.bsky.social with fascinating work on Pepe the frog as alt-right imagery that has been inadvertantly picked up and disseminated by news organization.

He sees this mainstreaming of hate symbols a resulf of 'discursive softening' by extremist groups.

Even though news organizations are in a severe crisis, the public does not see a crisis. People have access to all the information they need, argues @rasmuskleis.bsky.social

He shows the rise of influencers and regular people as sources of info competing with news publishers

1) Altering the newsfeed algorithms
2) Reshaping virality
3) Deactivating the platforms

They find (some) limited effects on news engmnt and knowledge.
