Exactly!! Including the emission/unit of energy, biomass can be even worse. @teampfpi.bsky.social

Europe’s bioeconomy risks harming forests if current practices - clearcutting and biomass subsidies - continues. The EU needs binding restoration targets, strict protection of primary and OGF, and clear guidelines on forest management to benefit local communities, nature, and the climate. #LifeTerra

A4.2: 2/2 @Fern NGO showed that funds are currently supporting a model based on producing large volumes of pulpwood and timber at the lowest possible cost #harmfulsubsidies for big industries. This model is neither environmentally sustainable nor economically viable for small producers.

A4: 1/2 EU policies fall short in preventing forest degradation. ESABCC (2024) identified inconsistencies in the policy architecture—for example, the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) still allows the use of forest biomass in ways that undermine climate and biodiversity goals. #LifeTerra

A3.2: 2/2 Close-to-nature forestry helps forests adapt to CC by avoiding clearcuts and maintaining a mix of tree species and ages, which enhances structural and biological diversity. This boosts resilience to climate-related stressors while supporting biodiversity and carbon storage. #LifeTerra

A3.1 : 1/2 Climate change is increasing the risk of forests being affected by natural disturbances like wildfires and insect outbreaks, impacting their ability to provide wood and sequester carbon. Current forestry practices diminish the resilience and increase their vulnerabilities. #LifeTerra

A2.2: 2/2 🧵Agroforestry is recognised as a nature-based solution in the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the EU Forest Strategy, and a climate resilient alternative. The EC must ensure adequate subsidies and align policies to avoid contradictions that disincentivise agroforestry. #LifeTerra

A2.1: 1/2 🧵Agroforestry combines trees with farming to boost climate change mitigation and adaptation by increasing carbon storage, preventing deforestation, supporting biodiversity conservation, reducing the use of fertilisers, producing cleaner water, and controlling soil erosion. #LifeTerra

2/2 🧵The 2024 ESABCC report warns that EU policies like RED III have driven unsustainable wood demand, pushing biomass harvesting beyond ecological limits. Policy must ensure biomass use supports forest health, biodiversity, & carbon sink capacity with benefits for nature and people! #LifeTerra

1/2 🧵 Forest biomass policy in the EU is a key contributor to logging—responsible for 82%+ of forest disturbances across Europe. Climate change intensifies forest degradation. Together, they weaken the LULUCF carbon sink, vital for climate action and sustainable forest management. #LifeTerra
