Blue jays do this to us all the time!!! Sometimes it IS a hawk, but I swear 50-60% of the time it's just a blue jay in the tree trying to scare away the birds and squirrels from our feeders so they get all the treats

Hi! I think that might actually be a killdeer! We get a lot of them in northern Ohio during breeding season, but it looks like probably half of NC is a year-round zone for them. They love nesting in parking lots and other flat, rocky areas, so that's where we spot most of them!
