This character, Helios, is based on my sister. She’s one of the strongest people I know and has the capacity to accomplish everything she sets her mind to.

It helped to put my emotions and memories onto a page. And imagine what it would be like to walk with her one last time. To go with her to the dark. Put my hand in her head, and tell her that I’ll find her there one day.

That was her last day. I carried her to the car, then into the vet. I put my hand on her as she was put to sleep. I didn’t take my hand away until she stopped.

Then when I got too tall she would jump to reach my hand. She would do this for hours nonstop. Then she got too told to run, and too old to jump. That didn’t stop her from trying though. Then she became too old to go on walks, so we would just stand together. Then she got too old to stand.
