PS if I learn nothing else from Marple though, it’s to realize when it’s time to shut the hell up and/or leave.

Miss Marple knows practically everybody. She’s too busy to be lonely. There’s still so many places to visit and crimes to solve. And I think that’s what I want to be when I grow up—too busy to get old. I want to take up a new hobby and have people to underestimate me at their peril.

What I mean by that is, before anyone can get tired of her, she abruptly ends the conversation, leaving them confused. She’s also very good at listening. They may think of her still as a harmless old lady until it’s too late.

I’m not sure how old Marple is supposed to be, but I swear in all of these she has traveled somewhere else. She’s almost never at home let alone lounging in bed. Even when she’s sitting down she’s knitting or reading. And she has this absolute gift of leaving.

And what I love about Marple is she very clearly has Thoughts and Opinions about many things that she absolutely keeps to herself. Camilla makes a comment about both of them being at death’s door and Marple very clearly says “speak for yourself” just with her eyes.

The friend (Camilla) is almost proud of the fact she spends all day in bed. She cracks a joke about the only exercise she gets is lifting a cigarette to her lips (it’s actually quite the workout, since Camilla is never without one).

But the episode I’m watching it’s the old people who are the problem. Here’s Marple on a holiday where she intends to sketch. She tells an old friend that she only recently started sketching. Her friend looks at her like she’s crazy.

There are all these people who underestimate her (which is entirely the point of these stories) and she is very unassuming. Young people are condescending until they’re suddenly in trouble and either need her help or need help from her.

I’m pretty sure I’ve watched these already, but I don’t really remember them. There’s a lot of famous British actors in them, most young and not really stars yet. So that’s fun. But the most fun thing is actually Miss Marple herself.

I’m trying to enjoy the show for what it is rather than how faithful it is to the source. Most of all I was just hoping to see Juliette: I like the actress in other things I’ve seen her in, but I’m not really enjoying how they wrote the character so far. I’m not that far in, so maybe I’m wrong?

There’s also a character I wish they had brought in sooner because he’s a major part of Wool and drives so much of conflict and plot. I suspect a lot of his arc has been shifted to a new group, Judicial, which was not in the book and not really a necessary addition.
