That said, maybe check out Nine Goblins by T. Kingfisher. Standard fantasy, but very weird. Features a lost group of goblins and an elf veterinarian who takes care of the non-photogenic animals.

Honestly a *degree* of darkness is core to the genre. Yeah, you get some brighter kid-focused stuff, but all the Inner Scouts die protecting Usagi at the end of the first arc of Sailor Moon.
(They get better.)
