Nm, found it! I remember this now. Not sure why the designs seem so much more compelling in the fan art, but now I really have to figure out how to knit some of these. 🥰

I wanted to push back on this, but it occurred to me that "Bloom" does technically contain a twist. That said, the story is so "the narrator doth protest too much" that I can't help but think of the twist as nearly anti-climactic/highly foreseeable. Does that still count?

"Bloom" (the only story I've ever published) is just shy of 500 words. It doesn't have a plot to speak of and only one proper character, not counting the largely reative narrator. I think of it more as a character study/short history. Can't tell if it helps or not that it's creative non-fiction...

I dunno, both sides are supposed to be sewn up. Also, a small upturn on the other side as well would have given a similar but even more smug vibe, which suits the scene almost better. Am I overthinking this? 😅

It really is. It gets better, for sure, but it's never comfortable. The number of "abductions" go down, to borrow your metaphor, and you know more what to expect when when they happen, but it's still rough. Welcome to the (very sad) club - grab some cookies and a warm drink.
