Hello I am an artist and academic re-drawing the boundaries of music and emotional experience. I am a new professor of music at Université de Montreal Canada. I'm now focused on writing my first grants. I research biofeedback, emotions, asmr and music tech. I also make experimental music. Enjoy
When I brought up the subject of "ants on a log" to my spouse the reaction was incredulous disgust. Is this a class divide or a cultural divide (western Canada vs quebec)?

I really love traveling but honestly I do my best work at home and I am eager to go into a documentation and organization mode while nesting this fall after I come back from kikk festival

What the heck was the last Canadaland episode where Jesse Brown basically attempted to terrify Canadians by quoting an anonymous "well connected" person that Canadians will inevitably become Americans unless they became monthly subscribers to his show? I mean that was basically what happened right?

Feeling so happy, sensual, and carefree this autumn. Profiting from the smells and temperature of fall, feeling the seasons, baking apple spice cake

I keep on dreaming about Pastel and Camélia lately. Little everyday dreams. I told Tats over breakfast today, and they said "your dreams are highly detailed and also mundane."

As long as the ghosts of my family come to visit me I don't mind.

Having an undiagnosed neurological issue is cool because if you ever get sad for absolutely any reason you can whisper to yourself "but I didn't have a full blown body crisis today" and feel a little better.

as useful as I understand Material Engagement theory to be I am really struggling to feel *excited* by it.

@sesmith.lol made this great article on asmr and sexuality that I contributed to through a light chat ✨️

All forms of labor should be present in our art.

I am completed enamored by Claudia Arozqueta's book on Heartbeat Art (MIT Press 2023). Her deep dive into medical history and means of listening to the body is inspiring beyond what I understood the history of biofeedback to be.

There are fireflies seemingly everywhere around me at night lately, the heat brings them out. It's a small bit of magic specific to the east coast: i never saw a firefly while growing up in the midwest.

The season is changing: appreciate the solstice omens.

Writing a score for instrumental ensemble takes so much more time and knowledge resources than any normal person realizes, and since I do it by hand I feel like a character in a Victorian novel.

the new eda sensor design of the BioSynth literally sends the headphone output of a 100hz sine tone through your fingertips to detect emotional engagement and this is so pseudo new age I could scream from delight

"my multimeter is giving me weird values, uhm, do you know anything about that?"

"oh yeah uh, I wanted to measure an AC signal or maybe current, I can't remember, anyways I did and there was a popping sound, I just put it back on your bench."

this is love, everyone. this is love.

5/4 to be clear I'm not anti ChatGPT, but when I visit artists' websites I can SMELL ChatGPT coming off a lot of the bios. it makes me feel a lot of pity that someone would outsource the meaning of their own artistic work to an algorithm ran by collaborators of the current United States oligarchy.

4) all the same, what role can educators play in encouraging students to take the risk of thinking for themselves or trusting that original ideas have value? Why do students lack the confidence to read or research? How can we reward what looks like original research even if it isn't written well?
June 4, 2025 at 3:00 PM
3) but maybe this isn't really a "problem", just a cruel irony that reflects the transactional nature of the market. artists don't need to be smart nor original they just need to be marketable and connect. being original can actually damage your career if your expression is alienating.

2/4 art students are also using ChatGPT to contextualize their work with the same self-aggrandizing tone and sentence structure while reiterating well-trodden references, talking points, and politics.
