The court ruled that AI companies could avoid further payments, by introducing measures that prevent AI models from reproducing copyrighted material. However, the court stopped short of deeming the entire training on such material illegal, and focused only on its reproduction.

In this specific case, GEMA was able to coax the AI model into reproducing the original song lyrics it had absorbed verbatim. Thereby demonstrating that the AI model did retain a copy, and by reciting it, committed unlicensed redistribution, resulting in undisclosed damages.

The ruling is limited to song lyrics, where GEMA enjoys a special status in German law; distributors have the burden of proof, to show their material isn't owned by GEMA rather than the other way around. This provides them with a different kind of leverage others doesn't have.

However, caution is advised: The decision can be appealed. It only affects one AI model, pending demonstration for others. Plus, GEMA is a special case, as it represents composers. Meaning any use of lyrics and melody are subject to a license, even if performers aren't members.

The decision is far reaching and therefor remarkable.
It found that OpenAI, and not its users, are liable. It could force OpenAI to pay substantial damages, which are traditionally based on a hypothetical number of illegal copies; and force them to sign a license agreement.

Background: The night before Diwali is dedicated to the God of Death. Nepalese culture attributes dogs, as the God's messengers, the ability to guide lost spirits to the afterlife. Honoring them as an act of humility is believed to please the God, so his passing means no harm.

Opinions do vary, of course, but there is no general rule that prohibits cacao; ergo, people do gift vegan chocolate for fasting.

So, in case you needed any real world excuse to go a little wild in your story, feel free to help yourself to a chocolate-fast that actually exists.

But not everybody can abandon their work for nine nights. For those people, rules were established, banning certain products like wheat.

Except, when that was established, the Americas where yet unknown. So, native plants like cacao, coffee, and potato never made the list.

Why indigo? Because the production of indigo requires vast plantations that deplete already poor soil, leaving behind barren, infertile land. For a desert tribe, the boycott made sense.

When writing fantasy, readers are visitors to an unknown, meant to feel different to them.

The rain didn't intend to wash away the tent, it just did.

My mistake was to try to write a story about how you venture out, defeat the evil cloud, and live happily ever. But you can't stop rain from falling, you can only learn to deal with it.

That, right there, is the story.
