Microblogging has the combined labor of both. I have to introduce a topic into the discursive soup and articulate a thought about it, while under a character limit, without the feeling of actually being in a conversation since responses aren't live.

It's like school! It feels like short answers!

Chatting in IM has a nice extemporaneous feel. You can see when people are typing and there's a cadence to how their messages pop up.

Posting on a forum or a richer blog feels more topic centered, like you can really deep dive into something specific predetermined by the title and board structure.
