Maybe these requests are so common because academics often comply anyway? Yinz can do whatever you want, obvs. But still, what if we coordinated on charging corporations for our time and labor? There's an equilibrium where we all benefit. /fin

It's funny because the person on the other end is always on the clock, probably making good money in PR or HR. And yet they have never entertained the thought that *others* might not wish to provide their employer with free services. /5

Here's how the conversation goes:
Them: "Hi, we're an umbrella organization for <major industry>. We think you would provide a lot of value for us. Will you come speak?"
Me: "Sure, here's the market rate."
Them: "No wait, we're just a small organization with no budget." /4

Tbc I do a lot of public speaking, and most of it is pro bono or in exchange for a cup of coffee. I'm more than happy to donate my time to non-profits, libraries, museums, etc. But I don't think I or my employer (a public university) should provide free labor to major corporations. /3
