remember spark gap transmitters were once a common system. Arc furnace could be viewed as spark gap transmitter on a massive dose of steroids. Research can be used for industrial reliability work. Other applications would lean toward jamming systems and other interesting areas

build of prototype not necessary. Objective could be validation of operational capability under specified conditions followed by demonstrated failure under more stressful conditions. Could be done without actual flight. Instead use
system mounted on test stand near noise source (aka arc furnace)

I'm thinking something along the lines of UAV communications reliability in a high noise environment. Say around an arc furnace or other high current/voltage switching environment.
Involves spectrum analyzer, minimum SNR ratio for reliable operation, free space loss....lots of good opportunities
