Excited to reveal the cover of my forthcoming book, "Before They Wore Dodger Blue," now available for pre-order from @augustpublications.bsky.social and scheduled for wide release Dec 7. It's the story of the Dodgers' historic '68 draft class, the '70 Spokane Indians, & their manager, Tommy Lasorda.

Great card except for the fact these are Cardinals, not Reds.

In the spring of 1992, the Cubs cut 29-year-old non-roster invitee Jamie Moyer and offered him a job as a pitching coach. Instead, he signed with the Toledo Mud Hens, then went on to pitch 20 more years and win 235 games in the majors. A truly remarkable career.

Finished "The Last of His Kind" by @bymccullough.bsky.social on my flight home from the UK yesterday, then got home in time to see Kershaw get his third ring. An extra-innings Game Seven?!! What an amazing finish to the season.

The '72 Albuquerque Dukes not only dressed in mustard and ketchup uniforms, their relievers entered the game by motorcycle sidecar. Epic.

Baseball Prospectus was not high on the 2001 Mariners. In their preseason preview, 11 of 13 experts picked Seattle to finish third in the AL West. Joe Sheehan picked them to finish last. 116 wins later...the M's made history.

I'm co-editing a book on the 2001 Mariners for SABR and learning some amazing things about that team. Ichiro's splits that year were preposterous...

.445 with RISP
.460 with 2 outs, RISP
.545 with the bases loaded

If the Colorado Rockies can somehow can win five of their final nine games, they will finish with a reverse record of the 2001 Seattle Mariners: 46-116.

This is Vic Picetti in his high school uniform. It's one of the most unique photos that I came across in my research for Season of Shattered Dreams. I played around with a filter app and like how it turned out.

Babe Ruth hit his first and only minor-league home run OTD in 1914 with the Providence Grays. The 19-year-old spent one year in the minors and registered a 22-9 record as a pitcher.

Just finished Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger by @stevedittmore.bsky.social. Very well researched. I gained a new appreciation for this unheralded player from the 1950s and 60s Dodgers.

OTD in 1964, Masanori Murakami became the first Japanese player to reach the major leagues when he took the mound in relief for the San Francisco Giants. The southpaw signed his contract 15 minutes before game time. Murakami went 5-1 with a 3.53 ERA across his two MLB seasons.

Orangeburg existed for one season as a Single-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Jimmy Piersall was the team's manager, and the roster included one big leaguer: Tito Landrum.
