I think one of the strongest (perhaps most effective) arguments against it is “value for taxpayers”.
We invested billions in subways, but restrict (in many ways, not just zoning) who can live nearby.

Also: it doesn’t escape me that I have spent my entire adult life in the R (most permissive) zoning area, but the majority is single family - detached and semi - when there is huge demand for mid rise.
