The Trump administration has initiated an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Massachusetts, including the Boston area, that is expected to last several weeks, according to two sources with knowledge of the action. The initiative, which began late this week, is called Operation Patriot 2.0, the sources said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. The operation came just days before the Trump administration was expected to kick off an immigration crackdown in Chicago and as immigration arrests have ramped up in Washington. One U.S. official, who also was not authorized to speak publicly, said the agency had prepared plans for a wider surge of immigration enforcement starting this month. Top Trump officials have already hinted that they plan to crack down on so-called sanctuary cities, which limit local police cooperation with federal immigration officials. From the beginning of the first Trump administration, top immigration officials have sought to force progressive cities to cooperate, particularly in local jails, where ICE officials prefer to pick up immigrants directly.

He made the remarks in China after attending a huge military parade seen as a challenge to Donald Trump and the US-dominated world order. The US president has tried to persuade Putin to end the war, but the Russian leader, while praising Trump's "sincere desire", has so far not done so. Visiting Kyiv, UK Defence Secretary John Healey told the BBC Trump had brought Putin to the table, and had not ruled out putting more pressure on him. Countries like the UK, he said, were willing "to put extra economic pressure on Putin... and to give extra aid to Ukraine so they can keep in the fight". Trump pulled Putin out of international isolation last month when he hosted a meeting with him in Alaska. He also tried to persuade Putin to meet Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky. "I have never ruled out the possibility of such a meeting. But is there any point? Let's see," Putin said on Wednesday. He added that any such meeting required preparation to yield results, and that Zelensky could always go to Moscow to see him – a "knowingly unacceptable" idea, Ukraine's foreign minister was quick to point out. Ukraine's president has been highlighting Putin's refusal to meet as a way of urging Trump to impose sanctions on Russia and boost Ukraine's defences. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbour in February 2022. Later on Wednesday Trump said the Russian leader "knows where I stand" regarding an end to the war.

Democrats called for a hearing with Epstein’s accusers, who they argue have firsthand accounts that “may not be sufficiently represented in the Department of Justice’s records.” The Oversight Committee also subpoenaed the DOJ for documents related to the case, which the department began turning over last month. The president had in recent days suggested he would rather have Pritzker and other officials ask for federal assistance, but Trump earlier Tuesday indicated he was preparing to act. “At least 54 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, 8 people were killed. The AQLI report said particulate pollution "remained the greatest external threat to human life expectancy," comparing the impact to smoking. Researchers from the university's Energy Policy Institute analyzed pollution data collected throughout 2023 and compared it with previous years. Michael Greenstone, a professor at the University of Chicago who created the AQLI, told CBS News his team focused on airborne particulate matter — small particles that are able to invade and wreak havoc on the body more easily than larger ones.
