5/6: If such a high-pass filter does indeed operate in our brains, I discuss its implications for the practice of psychotherapy (focus on conscious affect and optimally treat chronic pain prior to psychotherapy sessions).

4/6: The high-pass filter would resolve intrapsychic conflicts unconsciously and would have a single parameter, the threshold, that would vary over time and positively correlate with the intensity of the strongest primary affective signals, which could be sensory or emotional in nature.

3/6: At any given time, such a high-pass filter would enable the conscious mind to focus its finite computational resources on only the most urgent needs reported by the nervous system's primary affective information streams.

2/6: In this paper I reconsidered Francis Crick's searchlight hypothesis in the context of Mark Solms' recent revision of Freudian drive theory. I proposed that the reticular nucleus of the thalamus may function as a high-pass filter for conscious experience.
