Perfect day for this album. In 1963, the State Dept. sponsored Duke Ellington’s tour through the Near East and Japan. This resulted in one of the best recordings of one of America’s greatest artists - or, in the minds of DOGE’s high-tech barbarians, DEI waste.

Bad-faith accusations of fraud were also used to undermine Reconstruction efforts. Du Bois disputes the notion at great length but notes its uncritical acceptance by white historians. Today, Musk/Trump frame their attacks on USAID, social security, etc. in similar terms.

Learned from @jonathanhealey.bsky.social’s history of the English Civil War that the idea of inalienable rights arose not from John Locke but irascible political street-fighter John Lilburne.

A good reminder of how these rights should be used: loudly and with great annoyance to those in power.
