We humanists are going to need to develop a new analogy. in the Things I've Learned category, scientists say that water is not wet, water *makes things* wet.

Seriously, this piece is awesome.

Woo hoo!
October 23, 2025 at 3:34 PM
That was as crappy a call as the first one. Hand on the defender, but doesn’t extend the arm to push off.

You’re usually spot on Carlos, but I take issue with a number of these. Boston is more arrogant or insufferable than entitled (like Andrew I’m considering the longue duree). And as a former Seattleite, I think barely relevant is better. Maybe your recent birthday impacted your cognitive abilities…

“All the news that’s fit to print”. Who are we to argue?
October 9, 2025 at 12:57 AM
You mean how awful it is to uncritically repost dubious claims from ideologically driven sources?

And really, the 76 Raiders should have lost in the DIV round (roughing the passer still stings after all these years)

Only the most self-righteous, self-delusional, self-centered cretins think that's more important that countering fascism. And there's far too many of you still.
September 19, 2025 at 7:48 PM
Well, congrats. Yes, others did not act well, but your self-righteous choices have landed the USA in the middle of fascism. Sometimes it's worth looking in the mirror and thinking strategically, not just knee-jerk blaming others.

Yes, AND the thought opposing Harris because of Gaza would lead to better outcomes for Gaza was a clear misjudgment even at the time and looks worse now
September 19, 2025 at 12:33 AM
You mean Miami players went after the sounders. Get the story right
September 1, 2025 at 2:26 AM
Not opening the whole stadium immediately feels like a device to create artificial scarcity and drive up prices (both primary and secondary markets). Not a great look if a goal is to build good will among the disaffected
August 29, 2025 at 4:58 PM
and I'm sorry to post on your timeline - I don't know the student and it would have felt even more strident to post there.
August 27, 2025 at 8:13 PM
I didn't mean it to be strident. I totally agree that Newsom would be an awful candidate for President. At the same time, highlighting his weaknesses at the moment when he's one of the few voices actively opposing fascism is, imho, a strategic mistake that we (the left) make over and over again
August 27, 2025 at 8:12 PM
Nope. Right now we should take anyone who is anti-fascist to be on our team. Single issue voting has gotten us where we are: does anyone think Gaza is better off than it would be under Harris? So yes, trans rights are human rights, AND Newsom is on our team until fascism is defeated.

If I'm a Smithsonian official, I comply by curating an exhibition that demonstrates how white supremacy is a "principle ... that define[s] our nation."

It’s great! UM asked me to write a blurb and honestly I’m having a hard time stuffing my feelings into 50 words!

Indeed I am - moved to NYC to boot! Planning to attend the SBL in Boston - if you're going we could catch up and swap stories!

Of course, I didn’t expect the department to fall apart after I left….

Took early retirement- was glad to see you landed in such a great place!
