Survived a social science PhD and now working happily as a government drone. Twitter refugee trying to find everyone here. Maybe the switch will make me spend less time doom scrolling.
I was not sure what sound to expect but I was not disappointed.

They are clearly intended to resemble Americans. Rebelled against their king and homeland. Brutal slave based economy. Giant naval ships that sail around intimidating and raiding everyone.

Others have posted their way into relationships. The goth lady/Liberal Currents subscriber/history junky circles gotta have some overlap.

Is "what smells good" smells pleasant or smells strongly of weed? As an occasional user, I don't recall weed that smells pleasant to me, but I don't have the nose to recognize much beyond "yep, that smells like weed"

I hope he finally breaks through and gets it. This is probably his most deserving year.

After about a year of applying I got lucky and got a state position. Subject matter was unrelated to my social science PhD research, but I sold myself with the stats and GIS skills I'd picked up. So don't assume you need to be familiar with the field.

I think the phrase is generally used to critique liberals for insufficient understanding of how elites influence policy. But Samantha is using it to refer to a lack of long-term strategy for achieving and wielding political power for liberal goals.

He is going to be the next OJ isn't he. Clearly guilty, but gets off due to police incompetence. Will probably write a book about how he would have done it for his fan club in a few years.

Interesting. I also haven't noticed much change since mine upgraded from 10. It moved a few things, but I haven't had to login or been bugged to use AI. I turned off something in the start menu that was annoying early on and that's about it.

I think I need to rewatch the movies with a mature rather than teenage understanding of politics.

There could be tradeoffs where the first neighborhoods to expand supply see more immigration and displacement. Historically, wealthy neighborhoods have been able to push density elsewhere. The progressive YIMBY perspective is trying to crack those places open to take pressure off the rest.
December 11, 2025 at 8:58 AM
I think mainstream YIMBYism mostly ignores those questions because it sees the underlying problems as being at the city/metro level and is agnostic about which neighborhoods get the new housing, though increasing local supply does reduce local rents.
December 11, 2025 at 8:58 AM
To elaborate further, I don't think the YIMBY canon has a strong understanding of capital's role in the housing crisis or much interest in addressing it (it is a big tent). But YIMBYism as a framework can be used towards progressive ends in restricting the powerful and wealthy in favor of others.
December 10, 2025 at 10:37 PM
As a progressive YIMBY, my hope is that policies opening up dense housing development in all areas will lead to dense housing in the wealthy places that have resisted it thus far, and thereby relieve pressure on poorer areas.
December 10, 2025 at 10:31 PM
Wealthy areas have successfully used state regulatory power to prevent dense development, which means that high prices push wealthy migrants to poorer areas with less political influence to block new development.
December 10, 2025 at 10:31 PM
YIMBYism wants to address displacement by increasing housing supply to reduce prices. While YIMBYism is generally agnostic on where that housing is built, their regulatory changes in practice try to open up wealthier areas to development of denser housing.
December 10, 2025 at 10:31 PM
My understanding of the YIMBY position is that wealthy people moving to poorer neighborhoods outbid the locals, and thereby increase rents, will happen whether new housing is built or not. Wealthy people are being pushed to new neighborhoods because they were priced out of where they formerly lived.

I can empathize with boys who are struggling like that because I was the same, but I can't sympathize because I know from experience that you can learn everything you need to by putting in some effort.

What would "taking the knife out of their hands" be in this context?
December 4, 2025 at 12:19 AM
Well, they did make the Nova Covert Ops Expansion afterwards. But I agree that Blizzard doesn't seem interested in the universe anymore (or maybe just in RTS), and I am happy they aren't trying to draw endless sequels out of it.
