As spooky season is upon us 🎃, we have cells that look like spider webs for #FluorescenceFriday 🧪🔬

Great work by Sheikh Faisal Asadullah Mahdi, showing us his work on cytonemes in brain cancers at the Prairie Cancer Consortium today!

Also Prague is pretty great😉

Great talk from @hc327.bsky.social at the 7th annual CCP Phenogenomics Conference! Dr Chen shows how rare disease foundations can really facilitate fantastic scientific progress directly helping patient families!

The lab keeps growing, as we wrap up the end of a great summer of research for summer student Shelby and welcome our new Masters student Sakshi!

I still can't get over how cool cells can be reaching out and interacting with one another! This depth shaded membrane marker gives us an idea of how dynamic these extensions can be! #FluorescenceFriday 🔬🧪

This doe looks so unimpressed with having me snap a pic while dealing with 3 hungry fawns.

Im procrastinating locking myself in my office for grant writing this afternoon. Im having way more fun on the 🔬 for #FluorescenceFriday

Happy Friday! It's always stressful the first time trying to mount coverslips, but huzzah! No broken coverslips for summer student Shelby Houston, thanks to great guidance by technician Shakila Sultana!

Gotta love coming home to Nelson to be able to go play in the snow in June.
June 1, 2025 at 3:27 PM
Fantastic talk from Gurpreet Moroak from @estherverheyen.bsky.social group! Giant larvae at the Canadian Developmental Biology conference!

For #FluorescenceFriday 🔬 we have an endothelial cell 🔵 with #cytonemes carrying vesicles (bright cyan dots) to deposit signaling proteins on distant receiving cells. 🟣= actin

Its FINALLY here! The first #FluorescenceFriday 🧪🔬out of the Hall lab! We're still in the process of optimizing different fixatives to look for cytonemes and cellular extensions, but a fantastic first time imaging them from Morgan Hiebert!

Getting the last couple weeks of deliveries all today makes it feel like it's a delayed Christmas morning, but for the lab.

So here's a head scratcher to wrap up 2024. I think I found a glitch in the matrix.

After being on backorder for a month, my monitors finally arrived. Got them set up and mounted only to realize the left ones display is fractured.... so close, yet so far, to having my desk set up 🥲

An oldie, but I love this image for #FluorescenceFriday . SHH coreceptors (cyan) promote/stabilize long cytonemes allowing increased intercellular signaling. Still setting up the lab, but new images to come soon. Stay tuned!

Next month, I will be joining the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science at the University of Manitoba! I can't wait to join such a fantastic group of researchers and continue investing cytoneme biology in health and disease!
Keep an eye out for some fantastic microscopy going forward!

Really looking forward to the Society for Developmental Biology meeting in Atlanta at 2024SDB next week! Come check out my talk Monday morning on how we are imaging cytonemes in mouse embryos!

Check out this solarized SEM of the neural tube lumen with added hedgehogs! In our latest work from the @labogden.bsky.social lab we found cytonemes carry Sonic Hedgehog proteins across the neural tube for cell fate patterning. Check out the paper! www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

Here we identified long specialized filopodia carry Sonic Hedgehog from signal producing to receiving cells across tissues in developing mouse embryos. Disrupting cytoneme formation or loading of signaling proteins into cytonemes affected normal neuronal pattering.

🧪I know its not Fluorescence Friday, but sometimes we just need some color to brighten up a Tuesday! Here is an example of ectopic expression of CDON (cyan) driving increased cytoneme formation in mouse cells.

Happy Fluorescent Friday! Here's a favorite of mine, STED image of cytonemes carrying SHH between 2 cells.

Hello! I’m a postdoc investigating how specialized filopodia (cytonemes) coordinate cell fate patterning for tissue development. I use diverse light and electron microscopy approaches to study cytonemes in tissue. Here’s a SEM example of a cool/creepy filopodia mesh on mouse epithelial tissue.
