I’ve long held that the quiet corruption of the D.C. press corps - not everyone, but a substantial percentage at the top - is a huge problem. You shouldn’t be schmoozjng and eating canapés with the people you are supposed to hold accountable.

I think that’s got to be at least some of it. I’m hearing from faculty everywhere that students aren’t reading. I saw a survey that said 50 percent of teens never read. I don’t know how accurate that is, but if true, it’s frightening.

This really made my decision to retire easy. Students nonchalantly saying they hadn’t read a 2,000-word news feature because it was “too long,” acting like I was insane for assigning a magazine article. That was 2020 and I’m sure it’s only gotten worse. It’s so frustrating.
