@lake’s 2026 calendar finally made its way to me in Germany this week (postal service didn’t really make it easy to get). Regardless, it’s a very well illustrated calendar! Getting physical items from independent creators is giving me real mid-2000s internet community vibes. Feels great.

The demise of Vimeo is quite sad. I remember in their early days, they were a darling among creative types, with a superior user experience compared to YouTube, and real enthusiasm for highlighting independent creators in a community environment. I still have videos hosted with them just for […]

On February 12 I will be giving an online talk at THU about my experience designing for Ableton Live: https://www.trojan-unicorn.com/initiative/sound-music/schedule/40785-ableton-live-and-designing-for-authenticity?space=95-sound-music. I will be sharing some insights around the theme of […]

Every few years I’ll bust out White Zombie’s Astro-Creep 2000. It always delivers.

New (second!) blog post up on the site: https://ericcarl.link/blog/leonard-koren-modernism-vs-wabi-sabi/. Sharing some of my thoughts while reading Leonard Koren’s “wabi-sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers”, particularly related to his comparison of modernism and wabi-sabi. I did […]

Today I’m dropping off my 10+ year old MacBook Pro to a local shop to have the battery replaced. They had also previously upgraded the hard drive. Other than not supporting a lot of modern software (I keep it on Mojave for 32 bit apps) everything else about it still works great. It feels very […]

“Most of the opinion pieces we’ve published in the last year point to art, craft, and the patient development of skill and discernment as the way not only to survive the age of AI but also to provide unassailable human value to work and life.” - […]

It’s interesting how Dieter Rams was popularized by Apple’s hardware design, and yet Liquid Glass is so contradictory to Rams’ principles. To me this is a reminder that a strong design culture is something that needs to be actively maintained. Just because you get it once doesn’t mean you get it […]

Oh dang — I’ve uploaded the new version of my website which now contains a blog: https://ericcarl.link/blog/. It might not look like much, but it was a fair amount of work with refactoring things and learning @eleventy. Once a project reaches about 90% done I tend to abandon it for a new one, so […]

“If you went into a shop looking for a dining plate, it would be the most plate-like plate you could find. Even more plate-like than you could imagine a plate to be. What's good about a more than plate-like plate is that it will do its job without messing up the atmosphere in the way that […]

As I’ve been off work since the 18th I’ve had a lot of time to focus on building my 11ty blog (which has included rebuilding the whole site with it). There’s still a lot of refinements I’d like to do, but for now it’s far enough along that I can publish it Jan 1st. Not a bad way to start the new […]

Someone please do me a favor, if you’re motivated — download and play this for me: https://xra.itch.io/uji. As I’m not on Windows or Linux it is not available to me. But the author is responsible for Memory of a Broken Dimension, so I’m very curious about it. 🥲

While Firefox says they’re “giving people agency in how it works”, it’s hard to square that with their actions. If it were really the case, and knowing their audience, any AI features could exist purely as extensions. It’s not just opt-in vs opt-out (like turning a feature off), it’s “the code […]

This is such a great detail of Autechre’s Amber LP packaging. The barcode is printed on the back, but then continued over the edge and onto the inner gatefold, which would be hidden when shrink-wrapped and closed. For what’s otherwise extremely unembellished […]

My colleague Christian Kleine (who is a skilled musician and very interesting person) has released a new album of quality electronic music (as he does every year) and I recommend it: https://christiankleine.bandcamp.com/album/inside-outside. As a sampling, try track four, “Reunion”.

I didn’t really intend it, but it seems like my attempt to build a blog with 11ty is my participation in #DecemberAdventure. It's mostly fun! When it works. Its being hacked together with bits and pieces from different resources, which means I only understand portions of it. Hopefully with a bit […]

A few years back I was curious about the similarities and differences between Modernism and wabi-sabi, as they seemed to have some characteristics in common, and others in conflict. Then as I was reading Leonard Koren’s Wabi-Sabi book, lo, he makes an explicit and erudite comparison. It’s too […]
